Aside from my journey to several schools before landing a home in Myrtle Beach, SC, I have spent my entire life in Matoaca, VA. Having two younger brothers and a family deeply rooted in athletics, it was within my genetic makeup to grow an undeniable attachment to sports at an early age. That family history, coupled with the insatiable desire to be the best at anything I set my mind to, laid the groundwork for who I have become.
In high school, I was a multi-sport athlete, excelling in football, basketball and track. As college approached, I narrowed my focus to football and trained diligently to accomplish the lofty goals I had set for myself.
I played football at Christopher Newport University for 3 seasons, playing multiple different positions on both sides of the ball. From there, I transferred to University of Louisville, and then finally decided to settle down and finish out my academic career at Coastal Carolina University. There, I graduated with a 3.4 GPA, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sports Science.
My passion for sports served as the catalyst that ultimately propelled me into the field of exercise science. As a clinician, there is nothing more satisfying than being able to apply the principles of performance training to elicit the necessary development in an athlete, to prepare them for any obstacle in life. Using the knowledge I have acquired, I hope to use the phenomenal platform at DefyGENETICS, to inspire change and make a lasting impact on young athlete’s lives.
You will catch me on Sundays in the fall watching the Dallas Cowboys religiously, alongside the rest of my family. We also love North Carolina Tar Heels basketball. I enjoy the beach, playing golf, hiking and most importantly spending quality time with my family.
Pain is inevitable, but misery is optional. We cannot avoid pain, but we can avoid joy.

Debbie Clayton, RYT, received her certification in Integral Hatha Yoga in 2001. She has been actively teaching yoga in and around the tri-cities area since 2001. She has shared her teaching with students from age five to seventy-five. She continues her yoga path through continuing education and consistent practice.
Debbie especially enjoys teaching yoga to athletes of all ages and interests. Yoga combines stretching, breath and movement to release tightness in the muscles and joints. When combined with sports specific training or a regular workout, yoga is an important aspect of injury prevention and recovery.
Yoga creates a sense of spatial awareness in that our body knows where we are in every movement, by improving balance and coordination. In creating awareness of the body and the breath, you are better prepared to engage in specific actions as applied to your life; whether it be in sports, daily life or just more freedom of movement.
Debbie is excited to share her yoga training and enthusiasm with the athletes of
DefyGENETICS. Her passion for yoga shows in her teaching style and ability to connect with individuals and their specific goals in training. She’s looking forward to bringing yoga to DefyGENETICS to help you become your best!

“I believe whole hearted in the DefyGENETICS philosophy and training methods. I have seen personally the dramatic differences that can be made in your physique by challenging yourself with less conventional movements you will soon see what you previously thought was impossible. I knew I was in the right place when I was encouraged to focus 100% on reaching toward the goals of the individual client as opposed to being concerned with volume. The whole staff is truly invested and that is where amazing things begin to happen.”
